1. Compiling with MinGW 3.1.0-1 isn't possible (seems that ld is broken there.) Get newer binutils (I've got binutils-2.14.90-20040120-1.tar.gz) and it'll work (works for me, even though they're rc quality.) Some hacking in distutils/cygwincompiler.py may (or may not) be desired, like setting -O3.
