1. Without addressing the specific cases you mention there are a number of reasons why a rendering in English might be different:
   
   1. whether the English word came from Latin via French
   2. whether the English word came from Latin via a German borrowing
   3. whether the English word came from a Greek word that the Latin borrowed
   4. whether the word was borrowed directly from Latin.
   4. the particular declension and/or gender of the word.
