1. Strange coincidence, I'm (re-) reading these books at the moment. They are a little frustrating, as you say, not least because plot threads don't get tied up the way you expect (for the biggest example, you have the whole Red Ship Raiders thing).
   
   But I like them, especially read along with the followup series, The Liveship Traders (and the new one, The Tawny Man, which I haven't read yet - waiting for the last one in paperback before starting). The gradual discovery and explanation of the whole Elderling setup is nicely done.
