svn is _horrible_, it suffers a critical case of "second system syndrome"; please, use arch/tla instead, it's far from perfect, but at least sucks less...

AFAICT, subversion would be the small and elegant one, while CVS is more like the elephantine monstrosity...

A more complete list of the problems and annoyances I've experienced this far is here.
But this is all "1.0" issues, not second system issues. Subversion is darn good CVS replacement. If that's what you want, I don't think you can find anything better.
(Personally, I prefer Perforce, and systems like arch and codeville intrigue me, but SVN is definitely good enough for everything I do.)
